TorBox with Plex: WebDAV Mount Setup Guide (2026)

Plex Media Server only reads folders. To use TorBox with it, you mount TorBox's WebDAV on the server. This is the setup and the settings to change.

Last updated Reviewed November 2026

Plex Media Server scans folders on its own machine, builds a library, and streams to Plex apps. TorBox keeps your files in the cloud. To join the two, you mount TorBox’s WebDAV as a directory on the Plex machine. The result is a library without local disks, but with a few rules that are worth following from day one.

Method
rclone WebDAV mount
Server
https://webdav.torbox.app:443
Email and password, or torbox and API key
Listing refresh
Every 15 minutes
Alternative
TorBox Media Center (fuse mode)

Setup

  1. Install rclone and a FUSE layer

Linux: rclone and fuse3. Windows: rclone and WinFsp. macOS: macFUSE. See the rclone mount docs for your OS.

  2. Create a WebDAV remote

Run rclone config, create a remote named torbox of type webdav, URL https://webdav.torbox.app, vendor other. Use the username torbox and your API key as the password if you do not want your account password stored on the server.

  3. Mount it

Mount read-only with a directory cache that matches TorBox’s refresh, and a rate limit.

  4. Give Plex access

The Plex service account must be able to read the mount. On Linux, enable user_allow_other in /etc/fuse.conf and use --allow-other. For Docker, share the same host path into the container.

  5. Add the library

In Plex, Settings, Manage, Libraries, Add Library. Choose the type and browse to the mount point. Set the scan options below before the first scan.

rclone mount torbox: /mnt/torbox \
  --read-only --vfs-cache-mode full \
  --dir-cache-time 15m --tpslimit 2 \
  --allow-other --daemon

Plex settings that matter

  • Scan my library automatically: off. Trigger scans yourself, after the 15 minute listing has had time to update.
  • Generate video preview thumbnails: never. This reads the full file.
  • Intro and credits detection, chapter thumbnails: off for this library.
  • Empty trash automatically: keep it off. If the mount drops, Plex can see an empty folder and trim your library.
  • Direct play: prefer it. Transcoding a remote file doubles the strain.
  • Allow media deletion: off, see the deletion warning below.

The Media Center alternative

TorBox publishes TorBox Media Center, a tool that exposes your account’s video files to media servers. Per its README, Plex, VLC and Infuse should use the fuse method, it needs a paid plan, it runs on Linux, Unix, BSD or macOS and is read-only. It is distributed through GitHub and Docker, outside the TorBox core service, so check its README for current options and read the changelog before upgrading.

Limits to plan for

What to expect with Plex and TorBox
Topic Detail
Rate limits First scans can issue many requests, so use a low tpslimit
Listing delay Up to 15 minutes for new files
Retention At least 30 days per TorBox's cache article, and the rule can change. AirLock keeps chosen files
Deletes One file deleted removes the whole TorBox item
Outbound bandwidth Plex streams through your server, so its upload speed is the cap

Use the setup for what you are allowed to keep and play: your own files, public domain and independent media, Linux ISOs you keep for mirrors. For protection of key files see AirLock, and keep a local backup too. If you do not want to run a server, Infuse and Kodi can read WebDAV directly. Jellyfin uses an almost identical mount.

Documentation

Plex changes menu names with releases. Use Plex Support for library options, and TorBox’s support centre for account and WebDAV questions. We have not tested every Plex version, so run the first scan on one small folder.

Our take

Plex plus TorBox is workable but fiddly: you run a mount, tune scan settings, and accept a listing delay. If you already run Plex, it is a cheap way to add cloud storage. If not, a direct-WebDAV player is simpler. Check the plans for the storage you need.

Frequently asked questions

Can Plex connect to TorBox directly?

No. Plex Media Server needs a folder path on the machine it runs on. A WebDAV mount provides that. Plex has no WebDAV source of its own.

What are the WebDAV details?

https://webdav.torbox.app on port 443, with your TorBox email and password, or the username torbox and your API key.

Do I need Plex Pass?

Plex Pass is a separate Plex subscription from TorBox. A folder library does not need TorBox to do anything special, but some Plex features (remote streaming on mobile, for example) can depend on Plex's own plans, so check Plex's pricing page.

How do I stop Plex from scanning too hard?

Disable video preview thumbnails, intro and credits detection, and automatic scan on change for this library. Schedule scans instead.

How often does the file list update?

TorBox refreshes the WebDAV listing every 15 minutes. A manual refresh is at webdav.torbox.app/refresh/.

Can Plex delete files from the mount?

Turn off any option that lets Plex delete media. Removing one file through WebDAV deletes the whole item from your TorBox account.
