TorBox with Stremio: Account Setup Guide (2026)

Stremio does not talk to TorBox on its own. You connect them through an addon that accepts your TorBox API key. Here is the general flow.

Last updated Reviewed November 2026

Stremio is a media centre app for phones, desktops and TVs. It pulls its catalogue and its sources from addons, which are small web services. TorBox plugs in as the storage and download backend of such an addon. So there is no “Stremio setting” inside TorBox: the connection is configured on the addon’s page, and Stremio just installs the result.

This guide stays general on purpose. Addons change names, hosts and screens often, and each has its own documentation. We do not list specific addons here for that reason. A third-party setup guide from ElfHosted (linked below) is a reasonable place to see which addons currently support TorBox.

What you need

  • A TorBox account. A paid plan avoids the free tier’s caps. See the plan table.
  • The Stremio app on at least one device.
  • A TorBox-compatible addon and its configure page.
  • Content you are allowed to watch. Think public domain films, independent releases, your own recordings and libraries you have rights to.

Setup steps

  1. Open a TorBox account with our link

Do this first. After opening the link, confirm the popup on the page, otherwise the bonus days do not apply. Details in how to use the link.

  2. Copy your API key

Log in to TorBox on the website and copy the API key from your account settings. Copy the whole string. A truncated paste fails silently, and it is the most common reason for empty results.

  3. Open the addon's configure page

Find the addon you picked in its own documentation. On its configure page select TorBox as the service and paste your key. Set optional filters such as language, resolution and sorting. Keep filters light at first.

  4. Install in Stremio

The configure page gives you an install link or button. Open it, Stremio asks to confirm, and the addon appears in your addon list.

  5. Check one known-good item

Search for something lawful and easy, for example a public domain film. A stream that plays confirms the key and plan work.

Common problems

Troubleshooting a TorBox and Stremio setup
Symptom Likely causeWhat to try
No results at all Key pasted wrong or filters too strict Copy the key again, remove filters
Item will not start File not cached on TorBox yet Wait or add it to your account first
Worked, then stopped Rate limit on a shared public instance Try later, or self-host the addon
Fewer results than a friend sees Different providers keep separate caches Expected, not a fault
Playback stutters Your connection or the device decoder Test in the TorBox web player

Why use TorBox here at all

  • It is a cloud downloader with a shared cache (files are kept at least 30 days), so an item someone already added is often ready instantly.
  • Servers are in the Netherlands and the plans list gigabit speeds, so the limit is mostly your own line.
  • The same account works with WebDAV for other players such as Kodi.

Pros

  • One account for every device you use
  • Cheap entry plans
  • Downloads run on TorBox servers, not your own connection

Cons

  • Needs a third-party addon, so more moving parts
  • Addon quality varies by developer
  • API key exposure risk on public instances

If you just want to play your own files

Stremio is built around addons. If your goal is simply to play your own files, a media server like Jellyfin or Plex is a cleaner fit. TorBox’s own web player also needs no setup at all and plays directly from the dashboard. Planning to stay on the free tier? Read what the free plan covers with Stremio-style apps.

Documentation to follow

TorBox’s support centre is the place to check account-side questions: limits, API key location and plan rules. For Stremio-side questions follow the addon’s page and Stremio’s help. Where steps differ from what is above, trust those sources, because they are updated first.

Our take

Stremio with TorBox works, but it is the least tidy option in this site’s guides because the glue is community software. Use a trusted addon, protect the key, and keep expectations to media you can lawfully watch. If you value a tidy setup, start with WebDAV and a player that reads it directly, such as Infuse or Kodi.

Frequently asked questions

Does TorBox run its own Stremio addon?

Not at the moment, according to a third-party guide from ElfHosted. TorBox no longer runs its own Stremio addon, and you use an addon built by someone else that supports TorBox. Check the addon's own page for what it supports.

Where do I find my TorBox API key?

In your TorBox account settings on the website. Treat it like a password.

Is it safe to paste my API key into an addon?

The key gives access to your account. Use addons from developers you trust, or self-host. Public instances run by strangers are the main risk. An install link that contains your key is as sensitive as the key.

Do I need a paid plan?

Check the plan table. Some functions, including Usenet, are limited to paid plans, and the free plan has a monthly download cap.

Why does it show no results?

The usual cause is a truncated or wrongly pasted API key. Copy it again. Filters for resolution or language can also remove everything.

Can I use Stremio with TorBox for anything I like?

Use it only for media you are allowed to watch: public domain, independent releases, content you own or have a licence to. Respect copyright where you live.
