What Is a Debrid Service? How It Works (2026)

A debrid service is a paid download proxy: it fetches files on its fast servers, keeps them in a shared cache, and hands you a direct link. Here is how that works, what it is for, and how to choose one.

Last updated Reviewed November 2026

Short answer: a debrid service downloads a file for you on its own servers, then gives you a fast direct link to it. You pay a monthly or per-period fee instead of relying on your own connection and on other people being online to share the file.

How it works

Normally a torrent downloads in small pieces from other users, so speed depends on how many peers share the file and how fast they are. A Usenet download depends on a provider and a client setup. A web link may be slow, limited per hour or locked to a single connection.

With a debrid service you do one extra step first:

  1. Hand it the source

Paste a magnet link, upload a torrent file, give it a web link or an NZB for Usenet.
  2. The service fetches it

Its servers download the file at data-centre speed. If another user already added the same file, this step is skipped.
  3. You download over a direct link

You pull the file from the service over HTTPS, or stream it, or mount it over WebDAV, at the speed of your own line.

What the cache is

The cache is a shared store of files that someone on the service already added. A cached file is ready the moment you ask for it. An uncached one has to be fetched first, which can still be fast, but depends on how healthy the source is.

How long a service keeps cached files differs. TorBox says its shared cache is kept for 30 days. Policies can also change. ElfHosted reported on 12 May 2026 that Real-Debrid started blocking a share of cached torrents by filename keywords around 10 May, with no public statement from Real-Debrid. That is a report, not a confirmed policy, and it shows why the cache rules of a service matter. Read the Real-Debrid comparison for the details.

What people use it for

Lawful uses are the point of this page, and there are plenty:

  • Linux distributions and other large open-source downloads that are slow from a single mirror.
  • Your own files, backups and large archives, stored remotely and fetched over WebDAV.
  • Public domain and independent media.
  • Usenet downloads, where the service acts as a managed client (see the Usenet guide).
  • Remote download of big files without keeping your own computer on.

You are responsible for what you download. Services publish terms that forbid abuse, and several, such as Real-Debrid and TorBox, take action on account sharing (TorBox’s abuse-system article lists mass account sharing as flaggable). Use a debrid service only for content you are entitled to download.

What a debrid service does not do

  • It does not make an unavailable file available. If nobody shares a file and it is not cached, there is nothing to fetch.
  • It does not host a catalogue. It downloads what you give it.
  • It does not replace a media player. You still need an app: Kodi, Jellyfin, Infuse or a browser, depending on the service.

How to pick one

Four questions cover most of it:

  1. Do you need Usenet? TorBox lists it on paid plans, Premiumize is reported to have it, Easynews is Usenet-first. Real-Debrid, AllDebrid and Debrid-Link are listed without it.
  2. How long do you want to pay for? AllDebrid and Debrid-Link have 300-day packs at about 25 euros. TorBox bills by plan month and shows longer terms after login.
  3. Do you want storage and file access? TorBox offers 300 GB to 1 TB with WebDAV, Premiumize gives 1 TB with WebDAV, FTP and SFTP.
  4. Do you want to try before paying? TorBox has a free tier of 1 slot and 10 downloads per month. AllDebrid is reported to offer a 7-day trial.

Two limits matter once you have an account: how many transfers can run at once, and how many devices or IPs may use the login. A TorBox slot is one active transfer: a torrent or download that is running or seeding. As of November 2026 the Help Center lists 1 slot on Free, 3 on Essential, 5 on Standard and 10 on Pro. Slots count transfers, not people or devices, so 3 slots means 3 transfers active at once. Cached files do not use a slot, extra items wait in a queue and start when a slot frees up, and a download with no progress for 2 days is removed. The IP column is about where requests come from, and services differ: Real-Debrid’s terms say account sharing leads to suspension and it is reported to watch for several IPs at once, while TorBox’s Help Center says it does not track IP and applies a fair share policy. Figures we could not verify say not confirmed.

Where TorBox fits

TorBox is a debrid service that handles torrents, web downloads and Usenet in one account, from $3 per month, with a free tier (it is an independent service, this site is an affiliate site and not TorBox). It has no official mobile app and is not open source. The what is TorBox page covers it in detail and the pricing page lists the plans.

If you buy, our link gives you 7 extra days for each month purchased on your first paid purchase. Open the link while logged in and confirm the popup; if none appears, do not buy. It is extra time, not a discount. Once you have an account, the Kodi, Jellyfin and Infuse guides show how to play your files.

Frequently asked questions

What does debrid mean?

In this context it is a name for services that unrestrict downloads. You give them a torrent, magnet link, web link or Usenet file, they download it on their servers, and you download from them over a normal fast connection.

Is using a debrid service legal?

The service itself is a download tool, like a seedbox. Whether a download is lawful depends on the file and your country. Use it for files you have the right to download, such as Linux distributions, your own files, public domain and independent media.

What is the cache?

A shared store of files other users already added. If the file you ask for is cached, it is available immediately at full speed. If not, the service downloads it first, which takes longer.

Do I need a VPN with debrid?

Your connection only talks to the service, not to torrent peers, so your IP is not in the swarm. Privacy still depends on the service's logging, so read its terms. A VPN is a separate decision.

Debrid vs a seedbox?

A seedbox is a server you rent and manage. A debrid service is shared and managed for you, usually cheaper and quicker to set up, with less control.

Which debrid service should I choose?

Match the service to what you need: Usenet, storage, longest pack, app support. The ranking page compares six services with sourced prices.
