TorBox Free vs Paid: What You Get When You Upgrade
Published Last updated Reviewed November 2026
Upgrading from free to paid mainly buys you capacity: more active downloads, bigger files, faster speeds, seeding and storage. The free plan is a good test drive. For anything regular, the $3 Essential plan removes the limits you will hit first.

What changes in daily use
Slots. A slot is an active download or seeding item. Free gives you one. TorBox queues the rest until a slot frees up, and cached items do not use a slot. Going to 3 or 5 slots removes most of the waiting.
File size. 10GB on free rules out many large files. 200GB on Essential and Standard covers most single downloads, and 1TB on Pro is for outliers such as very large archives.
Speed. Free is 250Mbps. Paid tiers start at 1Gbps. For most home connections, that means TorBox is no longer the bottleneck, your line is. Pro’s 80Gbps matters only if you have a very fast connection.
Seeding. Free has none. The paid tiers differ a lot: 24 hours, 14 days or 30 days. See torrent seeding explained.
Storage. Paid plans include storage, 300GB to 1TB. Permanent storage is available through AirLock on paid plans.
Web downloads and Usenet. Direct link downloads are not on the free plan. Usenet is a paid-plan feature, so check the plan table.
Free-plan friction. Free accounts complete a captcha when adding a torrent, and TorBox removes downloads with no progress after 2 days.
Who should pick which
- Stay free if you want to try the interface with a handful of files. Use the 24 hour Pro trial first to feel full speed, then decide.
- Essential ($3) if you are the only user, download occasionally and do not need long seeding.
- Standard ($5) if several people share the account, you keep a library, or you want 14 day seeding. A reasonable middle option.
- Pro ($10) for heavy users, big files, Usenet and 30 day seeding.
Is it worth $2 more per month for Standard over Essential? If three slots are not enough, or you want 14 day seeding rather than 24 hours, yes. If neither applies, stay on Essential.
Three example users
- Someone testing a media app with their own files. Free is enough for a week. Then Essential: three slots and 200GB per download remove the waiting.
- A household of four sharing one account. Standard: five slots and 500GB of storage, and 14 day seeding if anyone uses torrents with ratio rules. Keep the API key private (see the API key guide).
- A power user with large files and Usenet. Pro, for the 1TB per-download limit, 10 slots and the TorBox News Server.
Claim your bonus on your first purchase
Our link gives you 7 extra days per month purchased. A 3 month term means 21 days, a year means 84. It applies once, on the first paid purchase of your account (renewals and later purchases do not earn it), and you must confirm the popup after opening the link while logged in. Without it, the bonus is lost. Because only the first purchase counts, a longer first term earns more bonus days (3 months = 21, 6 = 42, 12 = 84). The rate is the same 7 days per 30, so it is not a cheaper price: check the price at checkout, and only go for a year if you will use it. See how it works and the pricing page.
If you are sure you will use TorBox for a year, make 12 months your first purchase. Only the first purchase on an account earns the bonus, and 12 months is the only term that earns the full 84 bonus days (21 for 3 months, 42 for 6). Renewals and later purchases do not earn it, so pick the term before you pay.
